Backgammon Rules For Beginners

by Ashish Kothari

Backgammon is a fun and easy game to play and learn. It is also one of the oldest two player board games. It is a fast paced and unpredictable game that combines the elements of both skill and luck.

Backgammon BasicsOn the backgammon board there are 24 narrow triangles called points or pips. The points are grouped into 4 sets of 6 triangles each. These sets are called the home board on the right side and outer board on the left side. The game is also played with 2 dice and 30 checkers total, 15 white for the first player and 15 black for the second player.

The Object of BackgammonThe object of the game is basically to move all of your checkers onto your opponent's home board then off of the board completely. The first player to move all of his or her checkers off of the board wins the game.

Moving the CheckersA player can move their checkers according to the numbers that they have rolled on the dice. The total number on the dice is the total number of points the player can move. The points may be divided between as many or as few checkers as you want. The checkers are moved from left to right. They are then moved to the opposite side of the board, where they are then moved from right to left and off of the board. A checker can only be moved forward to a vacant point on the board, a point that holds your own checkers, or a point occupied by only one of your opponent's checkers.

HittingIt is called hitting when you land on your opponent's single checker. This sends his checker onto the bar, where it must remain until your opponent re-enters through your home board.

Bearing offWhen you move your checkers off of the board it is called bearing off. Bearing off is only allowed once the players checkers are all on your opponent's home board. The first player to move all of their checkers off of the board wins the game.
