Many families love to play the game of Scrabble together. This game is educational for everyone in the family, even Mom and Dad, who often think their vocabularies are larger than that of their children. Kids often come up with words that surprise their parents and they challenge them, because they do not believe they are actual words. The idea of Scrabble is to use tiles imprinted with the letters from the alphabet to spell words that intersect on a game board. Each word must be connected to another word. Often, words are connected at the very top or bottom. Other times, the words intersect across the board.
Each square on the game board has a number of points on it and when a player uses that square, they get those points. They get all of the points for their words, even if the letter is on another word that their new word is connecting to. Some parts of the board even offer double points or triple points, and the player gets to multiply the number of points on that particular word times two or three, whichever may be the case.
Players have to get very creative at times while playing Scrabble in order to keep the game going. Words do not always give them the opportunity to place a word on the board that they use in everyday language. These unique words often cause conflicts with the players, and players can challenge each other's words. They can then look up the new word in the dictionary to find out if it is an actual word or not. If it is a real word, the challenger is punished.
