The Phone World is Changing and You Can Benefit From It
by Bill Neely
There's a whole new world brewing in the phone service business now. There once was a time when, if you wanted phone service, you called your local monopoly phone provider, paid what they said, and that's how you got your phone service.
But it is not necessary to rely on a hardwired phone system to purchase your phone service any longer. As a matter of fact, AT&T recently acknowledged this fact by announcing their intention to give up on wired phone service in the future. Since you already have an internet connection, why run another wire to your business just to add phone service. Your internet line can deliver internet, movies, music, and phone.
This situation has spawned a whole new breed of phone companies, anxious and willing to compete for your business. This is so new new that nobody has even given these companies an acronym yet; so we propose to call them "national competitive exchange carriers" or NCEC's. These companies can provide service anywhere in the US (actually anywhere in the world), and they are not protected by monopoly privilege like the phone company was, so they are eager to provide additional services at competitive prices.
Here is what you can expect from a NCEC:
1. A customized voice greeting to answer your phone to replace the old impersonal ringing sounds. Why not tell the caller who you are and what you do, while they wait for you to answer.
2. A custom routing plan, so that callers can route their calls to the right person or desk.
3. Caller ID; included; not an extra cost item.
4. Voice messaging, included; not an extra cost item.
5. Music or advertising message on hold.
6. Conferencing, so you can link two or more calls together.
7. Remote exchange inbound numbers, so that you can have a local phone number in New York or Los Angeles.
8. National and international calling at competitive rates.
How to find a NCEC? Just Google search for "business phone system" or "virtual pbx" and you should get a long list. Get some competitive quotes (Isn't competition wonderful?). And, by the way, these NCEC's have to continue to earn your trust and business, because it is very simple to move your service to another one.
So, if you ask the question: "What has my phone company done for me lately?" and don't like the answer; start searching for a NCEC.
