How to Become a Chess Master

by Joseph Nguyen

There are many people around the world who play chess, most of whom play chess as a hobby. But there are those players that take it to the next level, in other words, win tournaments, championships and a whole load of money prizes in the process. These people are the chess masters.

So what does it take to play chess as good as these people? Well, first of all, it takes a fair amount of study, practice and actual playing in tournaments to be able to play decently. To play chess like a grandmaster would involve considerable study, practice and playing of chess. But fear not, your efforts are appropriately recognised.

FIDE, the international federation of chess, awards chess players certain titles for achieving a certain rating under certain conditions. For example, in order to become a grandmaster, you need to achieve 3 grandmaster norms (a norm is a result from a chess tournament) throughout tournaments that have a FIDE rating tournament average of 2381. This must also be achieved within 90 days.

There are of course, other chess titles that you can achieve but the grandmaster title is the highest award, other than world champion, a chess player can achieve. Some perks with becoming a titled player include: getting free entry to certain tournaments, discounted accommodation at tournaments overseas and sponsorship. It's very similar to being a sports star, but your brain is much involved in the game.

But aside from the professional world of chess, chess is still very much a game of trying to outclass your opponent's wits, planning clever strategies and most importantly having fun during the process.
