Advantages of Low Voltage Lighting
by Clay Travis
With all the talk about solar garden lighting today, its easy to overlook the advantages of the more traditional low-voltage lighting system. These systems are a bit harder and more expensive to setup than solar lighting systems because they involve buying transformers to convert your electrical power and running wires to the lights. They are also plugged into your home electrical system so you pay for electricity to light them. However, they are also more reliable and have more options for light fixtures when you are installing them. Make sure you know the pros and cons of both systems before you invest lots of money in your perfect garden lighting plan.
Low voltage lighting is lighting that is powered by cords that are fed electricity by a low voltage power converter. The converter changes the power in the wires in your garden from the standard 120 volt power that runs in your house to a much safer 12 to 22 volt power. This makes the wires in your yard nearly shockproof and very economical as they use very little power. This also ensures that your system will always be there when you need it. Cloudy or rainy days will never impede on your ability to enjoy some light during the night. You also won't have to worry about where to place your lights and how many hours they may get direct sunlight for.
Low voltage lighting also gives you access to many different light fixtures that you would not otherwise be able to use if you were using solely solar lighting. Solar lighting excels when its being used with certain light fixtures, but it is nearly impossible to be used with things like recessed lights, which have no place for a solar panel on them. Using low voltage power will give you access to many more different lighting fixtures and styles.
